Combat Acne & Clogged Pores Naturally with These 5 DIY Recipes

Combat Acne & Clogged Pores Naturally with These 5 DIY Recipes

We've all been there at one time or another, wether the cause is stress, hormones, diet, or just an oily skin type; blemishes happen. Lucky for you, certain essential oils are really, really good at both treating breakouts, and keeping them at bay.

Maintaining a healthy balance for your unique skin type is the best way to prevent breakouts (take our skin type quiz to learn more), but if a pimple does find its way onto your face, you can fight back with these five secret weapons...

DIY Blemish Spot-Treatment

You know those pimples that you can feel for days before you can actually see them, let only clear them? This is your new best friend, this is a blind pimples kryptonite.
Green Clay is amazing for drawing excess oil and dirt out of the skin. Rosemary Highland is liposolvent; it turns hardened oil into liquid so it can flow freely from the pore. Together, they are unstoppable!

1 tsp. Green Clay
Water or Honey

- In the palm of your hand, combine the Rosemary and Clay. Add enough Water or Honey to create a wet paste.
- Dab this mixture onto the effected area. Leave for a few hours (as long as possible) before rinsing.
- Depending on how stubborn the pimple is, it could take one or a few applications before it comes to a head; then it can be carefully extracted, cleaned and forgotten!

DIY Pore Refining Face Mask

When your overall complexion needs some pore refinement and clarification, a face mask is the way to go. This mask will draw excess oil, dirt and impurities out of the skin. The addition of Honey will keep the Green Clay from being too harsh or drying, but be sure to follow it up with some moisture (like the DIY Clarifying Facial Serum).

4 tbsp Green Clay
Natural, Liquid Honey

- In a mortar and pestle, combine the Green Clay and essential oils, mixing thoroughly (if you don't have a mortar and pestle, a bowl and a spoon is good too!) This dry mixture can be stored in your jar indefinitely, as long as it's kept dry.
- For each application of your Pore Refining Mask, place approx. 1 tsp dry mixture and 1 tsp Honey in the palm of your hand. Mix to create a paste and apply to damp skin in areas of breakouts and impurities.
- Allow it to sit for 15-20 minutes before rinsing with warm, and then cold water.

DIY Balancing Face Mask

For those with combination skin, the Pore Refining Facial Mask may be too drying for regular use. This balancing face mask is designed just for you; it will cleanse and clear the skin, without stripping away moisture. This combination of essential oils will calm redness, clear the pores and restore balance to the skin.

4 tbsp Pink Clay
Natural, Liquid Honey

- In a mortar and pestle, combine the Pink Clay and essential oils, mixing thoroughly (if you don't have a mortar and pestle, a bowl and a spoon is good too). This dry mixture can be stored in your jar indefinitely, as long as it's kept dry.
- For each application of your Balancing Face Mask, place approx. 1 tsp dry mixture and 1 tsp Honey in the palm of your hand. Mix to create a paste and apply to damp skin.
- Allow it to sit for 15-20 minutes before rinsing with warm, and then cold water.

DIY Face Brightening Cleanser

Keeping the face clean is paramount for the treatment and prevention of acne, but far too many cleansers strip the skin of much needed moisture. On the other side of the spectrum, 'Oil Cleansers' are all the rage right now; if your skin tends to breakout you should probably keep the use of oil to a minimum, and you should definitely cleanse daily with an ingredient that will effectively eliminate dirt and excess oil.
Enter, Honey! Honey has enzymes that breakdown dirt. It is also humectant, so it helps the skin to maintain moisture. This cleanser will leave your skin bright and glowing, it will also clear puffy eyes and prevent breakouts.

4 tbsp Natural, Liquid Honey
4 drops Petitgrain Bigarade Essential Oil

- Place the Honey and essential oils into the jar. Stir thoroughly.
- For each use, massage approx. 1 tsp of Face Brightening Cleanser onto damp skin, allow it to sit for a few minutes before rinsing with warm, and then cold water.
- When you'd like to exfoliate, add 1/2 tsp of Besan (gentle) or Ground Almond (medium) to 1 tsp of cleanser in the palm of your hand. Gently massage over your face in circular motions.

DIY Clarifying Facial Serum

Possibly the hardest thing to balance in oily and combination skin is the moisture level. If you go too heavy on acne treatments without following up with moisture, you can end up with dry, devitalized skin. This facial serum is designed for skin types that don't properly absorb oils or heavy creams, they sit on the surface and cause clogged pores and breakouts.
Aloe Vera Gel is like water for the skin: it just drinks it right in!

50 ml Aloe Vera Gel

- Place the essential oils into the lotion bottle, followed by the Aloe Vera.
Shake well.
- Apply to clean skin in the morning and evening.
- During the winter, you may want extra nourishment and protection. Our Jojoba Neroli Blend is the perfect addition; simply add one drop of Jojoba Neroli to 1 tsp of your Clarifying Facial Serum before applying it to your face.
