As fellow Canadians, we know how you're feeling right about now.
You've been either under a blanket or under a bulky sweater for the past five months, and this first taste of Spring has you itching to throw off some layers and get moving again!
This time of year prompts many of us to consider cleansing or fasting. A healthy diet and plenty of water is, of course, the first step towards shedding the winter toxins (and perhaps a bit of winter weight as well) - but don't stop there! Once you've eaten all the right foods to detox on the inside, use the right essential oils to get the toxins out.
Here are some of our favourite essential oils (and recipes) for detoxification:
1. Geranium Rose
This is an amazing oil for cleansing and balancing the skin. Try a DIY Detoxifying Salt Scrub with Geranium Rose and Pink Grapefruit. Place 2 drops of Geranium Rose and 2 drops of Pink Grapefruit into 2 tbsp of Sea Salt. Combine thoroughly before adding enough liquid Honey to create a smooth paste. Use this in the bath, gently patting it onto wet skin.
The combination of Palmarosa and heat will stimulate your body to sweat out toxins. Make a sauna or steam spritzer by adding 20 drops of Palmarosa to a 100 ml bottle of Rose Bulgarian Hydrosol. Spritz liberally on your body while in a hot environment.
Start your day by using a Lemongrass Peppermint Shower Gel. It will wake you up and kickstart your body's natural detoxification. Add 5 drops of Lemongrass and 5 drops of Peppermint per 30 ml of Natural, Unscented Shower Gel. Using this body wash after sport or the gym will soothe sore muscles and increase the benefits of your hard work.
Nothing pulls toxins out of the skin more effectively than a clay face or body mask with Grapefruit and Cypress essential oils. Mix 3 drops of each into 2 tbsp of Green Clay, add enough Honey to make a smooth paste. Massage onto damp skin, allowing to sit for 10-12 minutes before rinsing in the shower.
A Peppermint inhalant clears the mind and detoxifies the respiratory system, while giving you a boost of energy! Diffuse in your environment, place a drop underneath nostrils or simply take a sniff directly from the bottle; it's that easy!
6. Rosemary Highland
Detoxify your scalp and clear clogged pores with the liposolvent (oil clearing) action of Rosemary. Place a few drops on your hairbrush and brush through your hair daily. Make a morning face mask with 1 drop of Rosemary Highland and a squeeze of liquid Honey, applying to a damp face. Dry brushing your skin with Rosemary will boost detoxification and stimulate circulation.
7. Detox Blend
A combination of many of the oils listed above, this is a great blend to substitute into any of these DIY detox recipes!
* A traditional Ayurvedic method of body detoxification is to start each day with 'self-massage'! Any of these essential oils can be added to Sesame Oil (traditional base) or Jojoba Oil, massaged onto the body and then rinsed in the shower. This is truly an amazing way to keep your body clean and free of toxins all year long!
